I think you are a bit early for going to Newfoundland. We were there one year in mid June with the hopes of doing some hiking. We could not access some trails due to snow and ice still being on the trails. A lot depends on the kind of winter they have. Also you might have trouble finding open campgrounds and some of the attractions might not be open in May.
Play this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9OommJlrPYQueen's Birthday weekend through Canadian Thanksgiving Day is trad. campgrounds are open period.
Granted there are cgs open all year, ie. Green Point, Gros Morne NP etc and the gravel pits mentioned.
Check the iceberg finder.
Check ice conditions via Environment Canada weather page.
https://weather.gc.ca/canada_e.htmlIf the ice is thin or gone in the Strait of Belle Isle, t'will be long camping season.
If there are few or no closures of the ferry from NS to Port aux Basques, NL, again, 'tis a low ice year.
I was in NL from 1983 to 2008. Now, in The Maritimes. To go by weather so far, I dunno. Like, by forecast I expect snow around me to be gone coming Monday. & almost looking like a year to leave the ice skates in the closet. Dunno, dunno, dunno. Last year largest snowfall for any year didn't really start coming down until the end of January. Dunno, dunno, dunno.
Again, check the ice and ferry crossings.
