I have made the I-40 trip from Amarillo to L.A. more times than I can count. Over the last 20 years I have done it towing a 34' Fifth Wheel. You will experience a couple of places with 5 or 6% grades that may require you to slow down and shift to a lower gear, but for the most part it is a scenic and good drive. As with all road trips the variations between mountains, desert and high plains makes it even better. You can expect to see some highway construction, but not anymore than you would find on any other long distance trip.
As for the extra 160 miles, the time you save in flat highway versus mountains will more than make up. And with so many new and different things to see along the I-40 route, you owe it to yourself to take it and enjoy this wonderful country.
