Anyone familiar with Crown Batteries?

I went to my supplier and he no longer carries Trojan but now carries Crown (CR235, similar to Trojan T105). Is anyone using them and or familiar with them? A comparison I red states they have the thickest plates in the business. Also what about Costco GC2 Interstate? About $40.00 less than Crown, don't know about the T105.

  • Thanks for the inputs. I went for the Crown CR235's. I think they will do me good.
  • Any battery that yields a higher profit margin tends to be "a better battery". Crown has a good reputation. I am curious though about the OP's statement about Crown's bragging they have "The Thickest Plate In The Industry".

Any specs available? How about weight? Like to share?
  • Shortly after I purchased my rig I replaced the 4 6 volts with Sam's Club batteries. I also changed the converter to a Progressive Dynamics and have had zero problems. Note I just cleaned the Battery Bay & noticed May-05 on the batteries!

  • The Folks at Arizona Wind and Sun say the Crowns are the best wet cell batts available, in their opinion, FWIW. They also sell Trojan and Surrette. Hard to imagine they surpass surrette

I have a pair of Crown group 27's (12 volts). I like them. They are still providing for my needs despite being overcharged and underwatered all last summer due to trusting my Centech voltmeter and other various other ignorances. Probably have around 500 cycles on them down below 80%, rarely more than 50%.

They are 56 A/h from full as I type this, taking 9 amps from the sun.

No experiences with the 6v's, but I'd trust them. There were reports that the Trojans are not what they once were, but I have not seen those reports lately.
  • In the golf cart world, Crown batteries are regarded as the gold standard with Trojan a close second. One easy way to compare different brand batteries of the same advertised capacity is to look at how much each battery weighs. This can be a great indicator of how similarly rated batteries can be expected to perform against each other.

  • I went with Sams GC2 Energizers, my local battery warehouse was wanting $75 MORE per battery for Trojans. Got the Sams batteries for $140 for the pair and I would had about $300 in the Trojan brand, I suspect that Crowns will be about the same way.

MOST batteries IF taken care of properly regardless of the name stamped on it should get you 5-10 yrs of usable life.

I USED to be a big Sears "Diehard" battery user, not so much now, I have had a few to many of them in vehicles which didn't work as well or as long os the OEM battery. Not to mention the premium price that Sears charges for them.

The last Sears battery I bought cost $170 for my truck, had to replace it after two years, bought a Sams battery in the same group size for $120..

So far my Sams GC batteries are 6yrs old and still GOING and GOING on GOING...
  • The Trojan T105 is the best on the market. I would travel to find a supplier rather than purchase anything else for a travel trailer. The Trojan will literally take a beating - I've used them in electric lift trucks (imagine 5000 Lbs of lift truck and load smashing it's way over a 1" lip all day long - with NO SUSPENSION. Vibration or lack of electrolyte maintenance usually what causes batteries to fail. The Crown CR235 is a good product, I'm not familiar with the Costco battery, but would avoid anything from Interstate / US Battery - easily the worst battery on the planet.
  • I have 2-6 volt Crown batteries. They are 2+ years old. I have not had any problems with them. During their life they have been used and I hate to admit it- abused. The RV had a wiring issue from the factory that lead to the batteries discharging.
