A little rain here.....Monsoon Hits Quartzite.

The first one is Wahweap Canyon which comes into Lake Powell into Wahweap Bay just north of Page, AZ. Most of the canyon is in UT. We have driven the canyon down to the lake but in dry season. There is a Wahweap Campground that is really good and a marina for boat rides on Lake Powell.

It is not uncommon on this area to have washes close down roads all over the place but, as said, many times you can go thru in a relatively short period of time unless there is dirt / debris left behind.

Here is the video I was talking about. He doesn't name the canyon so it could well be. Not something unusual for it to be that far away. I knew you could get the flash floods without seeing the rain, but didn't realize you could still have such a severe flash flood so far from the rain.

And here is a video near Moab right down through the road used to access the campground.

We had a mountain stream that was normally 6" deep and 2' wide. Had a thunderstorm roll through and saw the stream go to 4' deep 15' wide in matter of minutes. Within 30 minutes of it stop raining, it was back to almost normal.

So it is not worth attempting the water, just wait for the water to subside.

Yup, we got 10 inches of rain here south of Tucson so far today...... 10 drops an inch apart! :-)

Seriously, DO NOT enter areas that have water running thru them; most are posted.

have heard that 6" of water can carry most vehicles away. Hard to believe but I have seen some real nasty situations.

The one up by Page was Wahweap Canyon I think - the rain was 40 miles upstream and then all of a sudden - some time later - it was a torrent thru that wash. We have driven that wash and lots of warnings posted - trouble is that most people either don't believe them or ignore them.

Be careful.

Having lived out that way in days gone by you learn what happens real quick..

Doing a work site a few years back south on Maricopa Road south of I10 flooded out. Not a cloud in the sky for days before the flood.. Then we heard the rumbling sounds... The station we was working on got totally surrounded with water with just the building and parking lot dry. I Think the town of Maricopa had about six feet of water. We had to leave our rental cars behind and be rescued by helicopter to get back to the hotel in Scottsdale on that trip..

Looks like a very wet weekend is in store for the region as we have monsoonal moisture in place and tropical moisture available. The high temps will be in the low 100 degree range, but that will occur early in the day, before the wet weather later in the day. Sunday will be a widespread rain event off and on most of the day, with localized flooding and thunderstorms possible. The new work week will be wet as well, and dependent upon the track of a tropical disturbance off the west coast of Mexico.

Good video, kohldad. And beware boondockers......do NOT camp in the washes! We saw that happening around Quartzsite a few years ago. We had to pull one guy out.....2 pickups to pull out a small class C. And then the idiot camped there again the next year!!!!!!!!!
