Baja California ULSD Better News

Remember the old saw (ULSD as far down Mex 1, as El Rosario, but no further)?

You can extend ULSD down to the gasolinera at the tiny town of JESUS MARIA. That's a mere 30 miles north of Guerrero Negro. The Jesus Maria station has gotten all of its fuel, gasoline and diesel for the last two years from the tank farm at EL SAUZAL just north of Ensenada. El Sauzal has not received one drop of made in Mexico diesel for many years.

That's a 200 mile to the south extension of guaranteed to be ULSD (UBA)

But to be explicit, diesel fuel in Guerrero Negro comes from the south (Pichilingue) barged over from Topolobampo, Sinaloa. It is Mexican diesel and Petroleos Mexicanos has given up on attempts to have this fuel at <300 ppm sulfur. So it ranges from 300 - 500 ppm.

Now for the juicy part. When demand is high for ULSD in the states, the Pemex/Shell Oil joint venture refinery diverts all of its ULSD for domestic consumption.

Then, Petroleos Mexicanos purchases ULSD from Japan. The tankers unload offshore at Rosarito.

Wanna know how much sulfur Japanese diesel fuel has?

Hsng on to your britches, it varies...

TWO TO THREE parts per million sulfur. Essentially sulfur free.

Yes, I get this info straight from Pemex. Tonight I get to learn EXACTLY how downloaded information (from a laptop) can skew a dispenser's accuracy. The PROM is overwritten to distort money-quantity relationships.

  • That is also what I heard, and the color is different. Pemex claims it will have USLD all over Mexico by late 2014. If you can believe that.
  • Publicly Petroleos Mexicanos states

"Until all gasolineras in MEXICO have access to UBA diesel, NO ANNOUNCEMENTS, no banners or signage will be permitted to be erected or made public showing which gasolineras have UBA diesel."

    WHERE??? Please provide links.
  • This is a fact of life in México...

What I do have for some doubters is a suggestion. Take a SAMPLE of Mexican diesel and compare it to a sample of UBA diesel. The Mexican fuel will be DECIDEDLY more yellow. The UBA is almost transparent. I've done this many times and it is infallible. USA ULSD is also almost transparent.

Do you trust your own eyesight? Maybe not, huh?
  • I don't know his source, but that is what he tells customers.
  • I would want to see the website that officially states what fuel goes where - or I would want to see the official information from Pemex before I believe anything about what fuel goes where. Anything other than words that can be proven to come directly from Pemex are still just rumors.
  • I wonder "what" is the source of his information? All he would have to do (or anyone else for that matter) is ask a pipa chofer (tanker driver) where he loaded his fuel. If it is a place other than El Sazaul B.C. then it cannot be UBA Diesel.

I hate to disappoint him but his statement is incorrect.

I was greatly surprised last night to learn UBA diesel has been going to Villa Jesus Maria.
  • Dan Goy of Baja Amigos says Baja has been USLD all over for the last 3 years.
