Banning to Tehachapi?

Whats the best route to tow between Banning and Tehachapi?

I-15 to 138 to Palmdale north to 58
I-15 to 395 to 58

The latter is 25 miles further but have heard its faster and an easier drive.
  • I did this route many times between Central Valley CA and Yucca Valley CA. Also between San Diego and points north! Hated the lights on the 395, because you would catch every light when towing.

I15 North to National Trails Highway/North D street, exit 153A. Turn left, go to Air Expressway and hang another left. Go to the 395 and head north. This route avoids all of the traffic lights on 395 except for 1.

Took a look at Google Street View. There are 11 lights between I-10 and Air Expressway on 395. Two lights north of Air Expressway. Looks like the extra 7 miles to bypass 11 lights is probably worth it.

    Hwy 138....DEATH HWY

I lived in High Desert for 20 years.

2 Roads/Hwys I hated driving on due to lots of head on collisions was 138 and Palmdale road (Victorville to Palmdale)

395 is a 2 laner hwy but seems not as many idiots driving on it

X2, 138 is a series of roller coaster bumps with few places to pass if you get behind a slow vehicle.

    Reason it is death hwy.
Folks try passing on those whoop-de-doos

We have RVs, we are the slow vehicle.

But thanks for the info, my routing software was putting me on 138 next month on the day we go from Edwards AFB to Menifee, CA

X2 just drove it last June and smooth pavement some dips.
  • Depends on what you consider better. When I'm heading through that area I like to stop at Charlie Browns Farm market in Littlerock. I like the pearblossom highway, if I'm not in a hurry.
