- luberhillExplorerGreat,, thx we are going to try this route
- pulsarExplorerluberhill,
Here is my first post:In North Carolina, US 220 and I-73 run together. Stay with I-73 to (north) I-85 to (south) US 421 to (east) US 64.
Tom - luberhillExplorerTom,,, so 81 s to 220 south around Roanoke...then 73 s to 85... is 85 south ??? Or east ???
The next 126 off 85
To 421 south ??? - pulsarExplorerUS 220 becomes I-73 as you come into North Carolina. They separate north of Summerfield, which is north of Greensboro. I-73 runs into I-85 where I-85 and I-85 Business separate. Shortly, I-73 is going to separate from I-85, stay on I-85. (That separation is US 220, again.)
Take exit 126 from I-85 to US 421 south.
Tom - luberhillExplorerOk sorry, looking at my atlas,, I see 220.. I don’t see 73.. or where to pick up 85
- pulsarExplorerYou get on 220 in Roanoke at exit 143. It's a left exit, I believe.

Ok I see it now... is 220 a fast interstate road ?? I was looking at getting off 81 in Winchester andband taking 66 to 17 to 95 to 85 but you think 220 is better
US 220 is not a "fast interstate road." It is mostly a 4 lane - divided highway with grade-level crossing. Some of the by-passes around larger towns, Martinsville, for example, are freeways. In NC, 220 and I-73 overlay.
If you want to get over to I-95 to I-85, I would stay on I-81 to just south of Middletown and take I-66 to US 17. Personally, I don't like driving I-95 between Washington and Petersburg, the terminus of I-85.
Tom - luberhillExplorerAgain how fast a road is 220
- luberhillExplorerWhat city do I pick up 220 ? I’m missing something

I've done that US50/US17 route out of Winchester back to I-95 just north of Fredricksburg. It's a pretty drive, but not really interstate. If you go I-66, you do a little back-tracking north to pick up US17, but it may be faster time wise.
According to google maps, the trip down I-81 and US220 is a half hour faster than I-81/US50/US17/I-95/I-85.
If you end up on I-95, take the loop around Richmond.
