Best route from Lubbock, TX to Shelton, WA

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum, but I hope someone can help me with this. My husband and I are moving our 29 foot travel trailer from Lubbock, TX to Shelton, WA in mid November. My husband just got a job in Washington and we are hoping to be there by the first of December. We are planning on driving 200 miles a day, assuming everything goes well and we are hoping to avoid any icy/snow areas. Does anyone know what the best route would be?
  • Thanks Roy&Lynne! We have driven to Salt Lake City, Utah before but it was in the summer. We did make one mountain pass near Provo and it wasn't bad, but it could be in the winter. This is our first fall/winter trip out of Texas so we are trying to be extra cautious.

Actually yes, I have friends that live in/around Hoodsport (Lilliwaup).

You will have to get used to cool/damp/rainy/cloudy days.

But when it's nice, oh my is it lovely.
  • There is no way in the world would I go all the way to LA and up I 5 to get to WA !! If you go that way to avoid bad weather that might not even happen going the most direct way what are you going to do when you get to the mountains of N Cal. and Oregon and the weather is bad ? Lubbock to Amarillo, TX to Limon, CO , Denver, CO, Cheyenne, WY Salt Lake City, Boise, ID I 84 into Oregon and then look at the map to destination. I have driven to Wash and Oregon in Dec. Jan. Feb. March plenty of times without hitting any snow or bad weather. Then again it might snow and if it does wait it out, I mean your going to add on a few days going into California so whats the difference ?
  • If it were me, I'd do I-10 to Palm Springs, then north to Twenty Nine Palms, thru Mojave and on to Bakersfield and I-5 north.

Do weather, if it is snowing in Siskiyou's leave I-5 at Red Bluff and go out to the coast. 101 isn't that bad. then get back to I-5 at Portland. Or just stay with 101/1 to Shelton.

101 is a lot lower than the passes on I-5, it may be raining on 101 while it will be snow on I-5.

Bingo! I prefer to get off I-5 at Williams, CA, and take 20 over to 101, then 101 all the way. Even in a larger RV towing a toad.

X 2.... Lots better routes than going to California, before heading North.
