Best route from Meeks Bay, Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Lakes

Gad how time flies...

When dinosaurs roamed the earth on our first trip to the JT, a tiny squirt hauling a giant salad bowl would amble up to the table and push it up.

Now, "Marie" owns the JT. She has striking angular facial features. The family and most of the bar patrons are Basque locals. Basque is the language you may hear spoken.

When I reminded Marie of the ancient days and pleaded with her to never sell out she retorted "Never ever ever will the JT be sold or go out of business. My daughter is following in my footsteps!"

What a pleasant anchor in these uncertain days!

Having just did the Kingsbury Grade in May(hardly any traffic), and even though it wasn't terrible, I'd still opt for the 50. As indicated, much easier on you and equipment.

I agree with the Hwy 50 suggestion. Much easier on equipment and nerves than 88 and 89. We ate at JTs in Gardnerville on June 7 before my grandson's high school graduation. JTs is still a great as it always was.

Even south on hwy 89 to Markleeville then over Monitor Pass to 395 is not worth it. South on 89 then jog east to Gardnerville on 88 is an unmarked maze.

You might want to check out the Basque dinners at the JT Restaurant in Gardnerville. It's on the main drag on your right as you exit town. Regionally famous. Just past Sharkey's Casino.

Keep an ear peeled for flooding info for the Walker River canyon on US 395. This is a very real possibility for the next 2-3 weeks. It is EASILY bypassed by looping East through Yerington NV at the Lake Topaz road junction. You exit the bypass at the Bridgeport CA. junction and rejoin US 395.
