Best route Rushmore SD to Victor ID

Traveling west in a 33'Class C (no toad) in Late July. Leaving Black Hiills SD bound for a rental home in Victor ID west of Jackson WY. Want to avoid Teton Pass (route 22) west to Victor at all costs. Thinking of southern approach to Victor via I25/I 80 to US 30. (Is there a good shortcut from Casper to I80?) Any suggestions/cautions would be appreciated.

Jim
  • What you want to do is get to Alpine, WY and take 26 west to Victor. To do this you could take I-25 and west 20/26 to Shoshoni, WY and then 26/287 to Dubois and into Grand Teton Nat'l Park then south through the park to Jackson to Alpine - a beautiful drive. Or I-25 to Casper then 220 to 287 to Rawlins then 191 at Rock Springs and head north to Bondurant to Alpine to Vistor.
  • 2gypsies - thanks for the helpful response. Does US 30 north from I80 then US 89 to US 26 to SR 31 into Victor make sense for an alternative/backside route?

    Thanks,

    Jim
  • Yes, 30 from I-80 to 89/26 and 31 is definitely o.k. Any of the routes are very nice drives and no issues with RVs. Enjoy!
  • Look at going North to I 90 then South from Bozeman through West Yellowstone.
  • RCMan46 - sounds like an alternative. How is US 191 south from Bozeman? US 20/26 into Victor?

    Many thanks!

Good road when I went over it last year.

There is one pass with about 4 percent grade west of West Yellowstone. Short only a couple miles and no sharp turns.

Take Idaho highway 32 at Ashton.
  • Just curious as to why you want to avoid the Teton Pass, we are going to Arco ID from Colter bay and we were going to use that route. We are pulling a 38' fifth wheel
  • There are a couple transmission shops in Idaho Falls that love Teton pass.

8-10% up for 2000' and steeper than that going down 2300' in 5 miles. Plenty of curves where it's hard to keep your speed up. You might make it if you have MDT truck with a Jake brake, but no way of knowing what you are pulling with. Teton pass is the only one I've ever gone around and I have a Jake brake.
