Traveling west on I40,is it better to stay on 40 or use 440 bypass?

In some cases, staying on I40 is fine, just stay in the middle lane as you often have to keep left or right to actually stay on I40 (as the other interstates merge and split off).
If close to a rush-hour timeframe, I840 loop around would be better.
Have not tried I440.
