Best route to Mono Lake from Las Vegas for newbie

NV 359 is good hwy until you cross into CA then CA 167 was in poor condition. This was 2 or 3 years ago, decided not to take it again. Another route 15 to Barstow then 40 to 395. Stop in Lone Pine and visit the Movie Museum then drive you truck up to Alabama hills where lots of movies were made. Dick
