Big iceberg aground in Ferryland, Newfoundland

Some amazing photos. But if I were to leave today to drive there, it would be melted by the time I arrived -- 4500 miles!

  • From the campground at Twillingate Notice the date on the lower
    right

  • Spectacular! We were on Newfoundland all of June last year. The icebergs were the main attraction & they did not disappoint. 2 boat trips, miles of coast driving later we got our fill.
  • 2 yrs ago there was an iceberg off St. Anthony, at the tip of the northrn peninsula, that was large enough to land a plane. This was in addition to having a small lake from the meltwater. It ran aground just off the northern peninsula.

Right now there are a few small ones just off the beach where I live.

FYI they are names for their sizes. The really small ones are called bergy bits, mid size are growlers and the big ones are the real deal.

And that ferry often needs advanced booking for larger vehicles...but that is an unusual large amount of ice to melt.
  • Howdy!

Viewing icebergs was number one reasons we visited Newfoundland a few years ago and we got our wish. This year is listed as another good year for viewing icebergs there also.

  • We saw some many moons ago when where visited there but they were nowhere near that big. What an amazing sight!
  • Wow that is truly amazing. We didn't see any bergs when we were in Ferryland a few years back.
