Black Hills route?

We know to avoid 16A to Keystone, but are wondering if 16A from Game Lodge to Custer would be OK with a beginner with a "new" fifth wheel. Advice? We are lookig at staying in either Custer or Hill City for several days to see the sites...probably not Deadwood area this trip. We are spending 2 nights in Wall to see the Badlands area on our way. Suggestions other than Rafter J? We want 50 amp this trip. Thanks!
  • If you are going the next few weeks be aware that the Sturgis motorcycle rally is coming up and camping will be hard to find. Reservations a must if not already too late.. Watch for all the bikes too...

  • If you're coming from Wall / the Badlands to Hill City and/or Custer, it's easier to use 16 from Rapid City to highway 385 into Hill City then Custer...RV friendly with many stretches of four-lane. You mentioned Keystone...coming from the east again, if you want to avoid Rapid City, highway 79 then highway 40 into Keystone. Either way you can easily bypass Rapid City coming from I-90 on the east side.
  • From Game Lodge to Custer is fine. It passes through the north end of the state park so it's a little curvy and there will be some traffic, but it's fine for trucks, motorhomes, etc. We usually stay in the state park, but it's hard to find a spot without making reservations ahead. There are several rv parks in the town of Custer and up by Hill City, and I think you can find 50amp at most of them nowadays.
