Border Crossings near Glacier National Park

Now in Glacier. Going to be entering Canada on Monday for our trek up to Alaska. Any suggestions on the best border crossing to go to. We crossed in NY at Ogdensburg (no problem, very nice) into Ontario. We then crossed again at Sault St. Marie, MI (again, no problem, very nice). Since we have come out west, business owners are warning us about difficulty crossing into Canada. Would think the eastern states would be more difficult. Traveling with a cat and small dog, they never asked us about guns, health/rabies for the animals, nothing!!! Any and all thoughts welcome....

  • What about crossing on the East side of Glacer? Plan on camping in St Mary.
  • Tie a bundle of store bought wrapped firewood to your rear access ladder. Then when the agent asked if you have any plants or plant products tell them that you were being very considerate in making the firewood easy for them to inspect.
  • We crossed at Chief Mountain enroute to Watertown, a very small crossing, nice border agent and a few questions, nothing big. After Watertown took Highway 22 north. Avoids Calgary and Edmonton. Very nice scenery, called the Cowboy highway. Game back through Cardston, busier port, longer wait, no hard questions, just a lot of trucks in front of us. http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/ is a must see in Naton south of Calgary. Richard
  • From Glacier on the west side Rooseville is your best best and from the east come up through Carway/Peigan. Coutts takes you back east and you probably don't want to double back for no reason. From Carway up therough Cardston and north to Calgary and work your way through here to Banff Jasper etc. on your way north.
  • Depends what route you want to take to Alaska. Coutts-Sweetgrass then north on 2 to 16 and west to 43 would be the most direct route but not overly scenic. 93 north to the Trans Canada gives you a couple of options or you could go to 97 then north. The latter is very scenic but I admit to being biased, I grew up in the B.C. Okanagan valley.:B
Don't get chatty and volunteer information at the border, answer the questions truthfully and you should have no problems.
  • If you are in West Glacier it would seem to make sense to continue west to Hwy 93 and go north to Roosville. I crossed there last year without a problem but I was a Canadian coming home. Many of my friends cross there regularly without any problems.
  • Over the years I have used most of those crossing between Montana and Canada. Coutts/Sweetgrass is the one we have used the most, I would guess. On the west side of Glacier is Roosville which is small, not much traffic, but the border officers might get bored and want to practice their skills. LOL If you haven't had any problems so far, it should go fine for you. Every once is a while, a person draws the lucky card and gets the full service treatment. I got it last trip, in 2011 by the Canadians on my south bound trip from Alaska. Just took an hour while they searched and was actually very educationally entertaining to view. Then they sent us on our way with very little mess from their search. Hardly could tell they had been in the RV. Just be honest and answer their questions with short concise answers, which it sounds like you have been doing so far.
