Boston to Philadelphia route

Mapping sites take you down I95 but I would like suggestions to avoid New York City area if possible. We are not in a big hurry but don't want to spend a fortune for fuel by going to far out of the way. Thanks
  • 90->84->684->287->Tappan Zee->287->GSP->95/NJT, depending on where in Philly you're going

95 to 287 is good, too, I just personally hate 95.

84/Newburgh bridge is a bit out of the way.

I lived in NW CT for 6 years, while my wife's sister lived in King of Prussia. We made that drive many, many times.

Don't forget to get gas in NJ - much cheaper than the surrounding states. Exit 7 off the NJ Turnpike is the easiest place to hit - just follow the ramp that sweeps right for 206 north, and there's a Valero gas station right there at the first light. Easy U-turn, fill up, and you're right back on the highway. As of today, it's 3.43 a gallon for regular unleaded.

    Valero 1080 U.S. 206, Bordentown, NJ
  • I would leave the Boston area as early as possible on a Sunday morning and take 95 to 287 (Tappan Zee Bridge) to the Garden State Parkway to the NJ Pike to Exit 5. Head west for about a mile and pick up 295 S which takes you past Philly. It's the route we take south to St. Augustine. Camp on!
  • Take the train.. :) No, just kidding. If you are not familiar with them, almost ANY of the paved roads within about 50 miles of NYC can be maddening. As FordTruckGuy has suggested, you want to give NYC a wide berth to the left as you go south. I-287 basically loops around to the west, and if you felt really adventurous, you could get on I-80 Westbound and then take the North East extension of the Pennsy Turnpike SOUTH to the western suburbs of Philly. Failing that, stay on 287 until it hits I-95/The Jersey Turnpike around Metuchen and then head south. But before you do this, just for kicks, zoom in on the intersection of I-287 and I-95 on Mapquest or something. If that plate of asphalt spaghetti doesn't make you dizzy, then you'll be fine. Or, you could continue east PAST I-95 a few miles, grab the Garden State Parkway, and take it south to I-195, which you can then take due east to Trenton. It depends a lot on where in Philly you want to go - there's a vast difference in the roads and getting around between Northeast Philly, and South Philly. If you're looking to do the 'touristy' things around center city like the Lib Bell, Indep. Hall, etc one word of advice - DO NOT take a trailer or RV into town. Like most pre-Revolutionary east coast cities, many streets are about 7 feet wide and people park all the way to the corner, making right turns an adventure in community relations. If an RV is your only means of transport, stay in Jersey, look for the PATCO high speed line stations that run from about 20 miles EAST of town right in to center city, and park at the train stations. PATCO is cheap, fast, and reasonably safe.
  • When I travel between the 2 I take the western route.....90 west to 84 west .. cross the Newburg bridge and hop on 87 south to 287 south... from there I take 202 through Flemington to my home in Bucks County... you could take 287 to the NJ turnpike and choose which exit puts you closer to your destination... Maybe Bordentown and jump over to 95 S from there ?? Joe
