CA road trip around east Lake Tahoe

We are heading from Texas to northern California in June, taking 395 north. Once we hit the Tahoe area, the current plan is to take 50 to 28, then 267 out of Kings Beach to 80, and then 20 to our destination. I know the west side of Lake Tahoe is pretty steep and winding, but how about that stretch of east side? We have a 40' fifth wheel pulled by a 2015 Ram 3500.

  • As others have said, that drive should not be a problem. I used to store my trailer for the winter down near Marysville so drove that section of 20 numerous times with no issues. The part from 395 to 28 to 267 to 80 is not bad either. Have driven that section well over 2 dozen times and no issues. There will be some stop lights in Incline and Kings Beach and you really need to watch the speed limit, they watch it like a hawk.
Have fun and try and spend some time in this area if you have the time, lots of history and the scenery isn't bad either!
  • I have driven this route many times with a 37' 5er, your rig will be fine but you should stay a day or 2 to explore Lake Tahoe, there is nothing quite like it.

FYI-The east side of Lake Tahoe is in Nevada.

  • Hey, I can answer this one---used to live all over the area.
Hwy 50 from Carson City to Tahoe is a 4 lane pull up hill--doable. From the intersection hwy 50 & 28, the road is a two lane mountainous drive, but fine. The only caution I would throw in is to watch other drivers. Hwy 267 is a pull over the grade, two lane, but just fine. When you reach Truckee, head west on I-80.
There is much history in the Truckee area-Donner Summit, the train routes, etc. Enjoy the area, we did for years.
If you didn't want the Tahoe experience, head north from Carson on Hwy 395, to Reno, then west on I-80. Cabela's (west of Reno) has a RV park at Boomtown Casino.
  • 20 from 80 to Nevada City will be the most challenging part of that trip but very doable. I pulled my old TT down that stretch several times. Several weeks ago we made the trip up 20 from Marysville to Grass Valley (and back) in our 35' Monarch. Very comfortable drive, it's a good road. Enjoy your trip.
  • Good route, but it does get congested when you get close to Incline Village.
  • I haven't towed a 5th Wheel but I'd say the East side is doable if you take it slow. I would not tow a 5er on the South West side. Pretty strong switch backs.
  • Taking hwy. 20 to Marysville is more of a challenge to me than around Lake Tahoe but neither one should give you too much trouble if you take your time. Smart that you're taking 50 from 395 instead of Kingsbury grade (hwy. 207).
