Campbellsville KY to Orlando FL

Hoping to be leaving Campbellsville in the next week or so depending upon when we are released from our jobs at Amazon.

Is it worth it to try to head directly south to Chattanooga via SR 55 to US127 to SR 111 to US27 versus heading east on the Louie B Nunn Cumberland Parkway to pick up I-75 at London, KY?

Also considering heading west instead and taking I-65 down to Montgomery, AL and then cutting over to I-10 via Troy on US231. We've gone that way before and it is only about 70 miles further but you avoid Atlanta, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

We hope to take about 2.5 to 3 days to make the drive.

  • Atlanta, Knoxville and Chattanooga are noting to worry about.
  • I would opt for heading West through Nashville to pick up I-65. Just come through Nashville about 10:00 AM and you will be fine, I live here. Going through Birmingham, about 16 miles of road, is quite rough, concrete divided highway, but once south of B-Ham it is smooth sailing. On down through Montgomery, Dothan and picking up I-10 then east to I-75. You avoid Atlanta. A few miles farther to avoid Atlanta is what I always choose.
  • This time of year, I'd be more concerned about snow and ice. Both cross the Appalachians, but I-65 has less change in elevation and avoids Atlanta which is a real bonus. Less truck traffic as well.
  • I make the run down from Ft Campbell I 24- I-75 then US 27- a good bit and I use US 27 a lot. South of Chattanooga on I-75 I cut over towards Rome on GA 53 then connect with US 27 around Rome. Then take US 27 down to LaGrange and pick up I- 185 south to Columbus. In Columbus we connect with Corridor "Z" Ga 520 exiting right at the entrance to Ft Benning. Then follow the 520 (all nice 4 lane) either to Tifton at I75 again or I now often cut off at Albany and run down on GA 133 through Doe Run and Moultrie and connect with I-75 at Valdosta. If you cut off to do the cut to Moultrie and Valdosta that's 2 lane--- but its a nice and relaxing drive across the peanut and cotton fields of south GA.

Lot of stuff around LaGrange and Columbus to see. Callaway Gardens, Warm Springs, Infantry Museum, West Point lake, Callaway Mansion etc etc.

South of Ft Benning a lot of US 27 has been 4 laned- and a good bit remains to be completed and is still 2 lane. I tend to run the Albany, Moultrie run off 520 as there are more pit stops and seems a bit more relaxing than taking 27 south of Ft Benning.

I came down I-65 recently from Nash and it was wonderful in TN. Once I hit Alabama I thought the rig was going to be torn to pieces down to B-ham on the rough road surface. I'm not doing that one again.
  • Hi,

I'd go through Dothan, but would equally try to avoid Nashville.
