Im a beginner and the $500 a month thing caught my eye then I looked at a map. You guys drive all the way across Mexico? Im in Fl and it shows me cutting across Mexico from nuevo Laredo to Mazatlan. Is it safe?
I would suggest from Laredo, take the Columbia crossing to the northwest. First night in Saltillo. Second night? There is nothing in Torreon, but there is one about 40 kilometers north near Bermejillo, which is of course our of the way. We stayed there several years ago northbound.
It should be easy to drive from Saltillo to Durango in a day, but again, there is no campground there. Some have stayed at a Pemex in Durango. Durango to Mazatlan should be a great drive on the new toll road. The buses schedule three hours for the trip. When we did the Devil's Backbone Durango to Mazatlan years ago on the old road it was at least six hours, perhaps seven.
I would suggest that you start your own thread asking for routing advise from those that had done at least part of that route recently. For the Columbia crossing and the Saltillo campground this trip (November), see our
blog. You will have to scroll down to find the entries for Last Day in USA and First Day in Mexico.
DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT Churchs'
Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping. Also, when in Mexico (probably Saltillo) try to pickup a copy of Guia Roji Por Las Carreteras de Mexico. (Better than their Guia Turistica). It also contains scannable codes for smart phones for city maps. I have never seen them available in the USA. Often in the large grocery stores, Office Depot etc in Mexico. There is a large grocery store (HEB? not too far (about 1KM) from the hotel Las Fuentes.
