To give a good idea of what the climate is like on Vancouver Island, I did a little digging around on the climate tables.
Our average winter temps are similar to the average temps along the Kentucky/ Tennessee border. However, they can and do get much colder than we ever do, so I looked at how many winters do we NOT go below 40F. To find a place in the Eastern half of the continent that compares to Victoria in this regard you have to go as far south as......Miami!!
