Can't fly out while you have a vehicle in Mexico?? True?

Recently reported elsewhere - that Mexico have linked their immigration and aduana systems and that they are enforcing their rules about no being able to leave the country when there is a 180 day TIP still in force.

Was surprised that it wasn't discussed here so I'm wondering whether it applies to the normal winter-time snowbirds or whether it only applied to those living more or less permanently in Mexico

June 20, 2016 Update
INM at airports appear to now have access-to & use Aduana-Banjercito vehicle permit database information when we fly out of Mexico. …
A recent San Miguel Expat forum post described a change at one INM airport office on for foreigners exiting Mexico (in Mexico on a Visitor’s Visa)… who also had an existing (un-cancelled) Temporary Import Permit for their foreign-plated car:

” Our car permit is in my husband’s name (we’re on tourist visas). He had to fly out yesterday to care for his mom for awhile. When the plane was just about to take off, they found him and he had to pay a 390 peso fine because he’s leaving the car behind.
Word to the wise! “

or is it old news.

Mind you a $20 fine is hardly significant but it would be if you were stopped from getting back in because of an abandoned vehicle

......I have read about the same procedure in different International airports in Mexico.

  • Any actual experiences with this Peter. Just that I'm surprised that I hadn't seen it here given there must be a heap of people go down early and then fly back for christmas or medical treatment.

Pretty common for overlanders further south to enter with a 90 day TIP and then head back home for a couple of months leaving their vehicle behind. Always technically illegal but tolerated as long as you don't ask permission from aduana when they have to say no. I've done it from Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil and I know up until recently people were doing it from Mainland Mexico - but if technology is catching up with us, I'll let them know on our facebook page.

I guess we can still do it on Baja and in the north and south hassle-free zones but just not on the mainland
  • I will add that at the time with the 20 dollar fine the TIP on the vehicle is being cancelled so any deposits on the vehicle will be forfeited.
  • With 180 day visitors visa and the 180 day TIP,if you leave the country the vehicle must also leave. The 20 dollar fine may not be a problem. The problems start when you return as the vehicle is now illegally in Mexico and the insurance is not valid and the vehicle can be impounded.
