Cape Breton

We have done that trip twice in a 40ft motor home. We have stayed in Cheticamp, Sydney, Baddeck, Ingonish and Louisburg. It is one of favorite places on earth. What do want to know?

Watch out for BICYCLES.
The road is fairly narrow in many spots, and a favorite route for cyclists. It can get dicey trying to pass them on the hills.
I'd avoid doing it on a weekend if possible.

The NP on Cape Brenton is beautiful, saw the biggest moose their. There is a spot at the very tip outside the park called Meat Cove when they used to process whale meat, the equipment is still there. We camped the in a Class B, right on the edge of a cliff looking out over the ocean. You could see Minke whales right from the campsite. You could also swim in the ocean down below and a crystal clear stream flowed down to the beach area where you could rinse the salt water off before coming back to your campsite. There were larger MH's there not sure if I would take a 40 ft DP there. The road to this campsite is dirt, there were no hookups as I remember if that is a requirement for you, but it was a unique experience.

You will have a wonderful time! We love Cape Breton Island. We were going to take that same trip this summer until health problems got in our way. The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton National Park and the Fortress City of Louisbourg are two don't miss places to visit.

Can you tell me which roads you traveled

We have done the trail a few times, but we would not drive our MH around it. We always camp in Baddeck and make a nice day trip around the trail. Need to pick a day with no fog. Its so much more enjoyable to drive it in your toad and not have to worry about stopping to pull over for that special picture. There are lots of real pull offs as well.

I believe you could take either Rt. 1 on the coast or Rt. 9 to get to the border crossing from Calais to St. Stephen. Note a new, large crossing station opened a few years ago, suited to large vehicles (the little one in the town of Calais is still open.)

Once you cross into New Brunswick, you are on Rt. 1. Main routes are good, comparable to US Interstates. You'll get on Hwy. 104 in Nova Scotia which leads you to the Canso Causeway onto the island. There, some roads will be more narrow.

Big commercial trucks go all the way up to the top of Cape Breton Island (faster than the speed limit) and I saw Class A RVs up there at the Hideaway Campground & Oyster Market, but if you have any concerns about the narrow roads on the island, you can base yourself somewhere like Baddeck, and drive the Cabot Trail via toad. There are some steep grades on the east side of the Trail.

Besides the island, there is a lot to enjoy all around Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, away from the major highways. The Maritime Provinces are great destinations - we experienced a warm welcome and excellent visitor info.

We travel to Cape Breton often. We always stay near Cheticamp at Corney Brook campground. No faciilities but right on the ocean. You can dump and get water for free while staying there 5 miles away at Cheticamp campground in the park. We also stay at Arm of Gold campground in Sydney. It is near the Newfoundland ferry dock and close enough to visit the fort at Louisbourg. there is also a coal mine you can visit and the Bell museum. We have also gone to Newfoundland twice with the motorhome.

I took a photo of that park last time we were there, and would definitely stay there next time. I'm only 22’ long, though.

Would the OP fit (at 40’), do you think? I saw a class C about 24' that was OK but sites looked sort of small.
