Cape Creek Tunnel

I just saw a video of RV'rs driving hwy 101 in Oregon & going thru this tunnel. Info says sides are 11'6" but center us over 14'. They drive down the middle but wondered if that was safe. Can anyone share their experience? Is there a way around this? Thx

Been through many times never given it a second thought! Semis use this road every day of the year, never an issue.
It would be pretty hard to explain why you caused a wreck because you were driving over the center line, when you likely have better than a foot of clearance at the edge of road.

You are mistaken. The 11'6" sign is for the height at the side wall. The 14' sign is only slightly off the wall a couple feet and marks the tunnel height at about where the passenger side of your RV would be...it is NOT labeled at the center. Oregon DOT has a webcam looking at that tunnel if you are interested in seeing it. Here is a still shot of it: Cape Creek Tunnel US 101 Oregon coast looking north

CORRECTION: That picture is looking south, but the north entrance is identically marked.
  • We go through that tunnel a couple of times a year in a 40' dp towing a Ford Edge and I have no problem staying in the lane. I've never seen anyone straddling the line.
  • I would hazard to guess thousands of RVs use that tunnel every year with no problems. I drive my 2013 Allegro at 13' tall through it with no problems.....and I stay in the lane while doing so.
