Cell phone charges while in Canada

Hi,

This is my first post. We are interested in getting a Class B van in a year or so. We have reserved a van of this type in Canada for a week in September. We're planning to stay in Canada for the week. We currently do the $20 a month verizon thing for ipads, so I'm assuming we wouldn't be charged any extra fee for those. But, do we need to worry about excessive AT&T iphone charges?

  • I had a friend go to Canada and after the second day he got a call from AT&T saying he had already racked up a couple hundred dollars in data and that was just what the phone used as he hadn't used it to surf. Data is expensive up there and your device may be using it without you even knowing it.
  • My Verizon 4G package does not include service in Canada.

For a little usage there it was pretty expensive. Something like 2.50 per meg.

For a short stay we use public wifi there.
  • You do have to watch carefully where you go. Cell phone coverage isn't cheap, and it is very local. Don't expect to go far off the beaten path...five miles is sometimes all it takes, and your cell phone is out of range.

If you are camping in rv parks, most will have wifi. If you are away from population centers, you won't have anything.

If you are near the ocean, you should have a marine VHF perhaps. In an emergency, they are quite good and they also have the weather channels on them. We use ours almost everywhere we go to listen to the weather channels.
  • Okay Tiny, thank you. We probably won't be making a lot of calls, I geuss I'm more concerned with the 4G internet charges. I'll check with Verizon for the ipads and AT&T for the iphones before leaving home.
  • Yes. You will be roaming internationally and the per call charge is very high. Look into the Canada/Mexico package to see if it fits your needs. Not sure they may have a Canada only rate also.
