Cleveland, Ohio to Gettysburg, Pa.

Looking for the best option to avoid winding roads as much as possible from Cleveland Ohio to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Which of the 2 is the best route or other suggestions you would recommend.

I-80 (ohio pike) to I-76 (Pa pike) to I-79 south to Morgantown, WV. Take I-68 west to Hancok, MD. To I-70 west to MD 66 to US 15 into Gettysburg.

Or

I-80 ( OH Pike) to I-76 ((PA Pike) to Breezewood exit. Pick up US 30 west into Gettysburg.

I will be towing our 36 foot 5er. We will be leaving middle of September.

  • As a former resident of Chambersburg for 50 plus years, don't use US 30 thru McConnelsburg and on thru Chambersburg. It is a complete PITA!

DO NOT take US 30 from Breezewood east. It's all hills and winding roads. There are two runaway truck ramps east of Breezewood on US 30.
Probably the easiest route is, take the PA Turnpike east to US 15, Gettysburg Exit.

    X 2
  • gbopp; Yea your route is better, I just go used to going the way I showed when I drove truck and had to go down to York Pa, that's why I just go my way out of habit.

Here's another way that will avoid most of the tolls, and I've taken our 40'MH this route several times. Take I-80 East into Pa to exit # 161; I-99 south to State college; US 322 east to Harrisburg Pa, then to get around Harrisburg take I-81 north; I-283 south; I-83 south and continue straight onto Pa Route 581; then take US 15 south to Gettysburg. There will be some traffic around Harrisburg but as long as you go thru after 9AM and before 3PM or after 6PM you'll be fine.

This is also a good option.
I would recommend from US 322/22 take I-81 South to PA 581 east to US 15 south. The traffic isn't as bad and the distance is about the same.
I-83 can get congested around Harrisburg.
I travel this area often and stay off I-83 as much as possible.

Also, when traveling in Pennsylvania, assume there will be road work/construction. You are usually not disappointed.

    Have a good trip.

But, you're going to Pay tolls.

Last week I drove south on I-81 from Harrisburg to Han**** MD. Then West on I-68 to Morgantown WV. It was decent road all the way. But, I was in my Chevy Suburban, not the Southwind.

I think the PA Turnpike is the easiest route. Except for the tolls.

    Enjoy your trip.

Another option would be, get off the PA Turnpike at exit 201 and take PA 997 south until you pick up US 30 east of Chambersburg..
It's not a bad drive on 997. A lot of Trucks use it going to Letterkenny Army Depot.
There is one mountain between Chambersburg and Gettysburg. But it's all straight road.
