Closure: NB I-15 in AZ

NB I-15 is closed in the tiny corner of northwest Arizona between Mesquite and St. George from a vehicle fire.

1. Does anyone know when it’s going to open?

2. If it doesn’t open soon, can anyone recommend a detour?

Yep. That's how I saw the closure in the first place.

So how did it work out? It was a 13 hour closure and when it reopened it was limited to a very slow one lane until the bridge inspector cleared the span for full traffic. Did you actually get stuck in parking lot roadway?

We came through just after noon yesterday and it was already cleared. There were some cones and a sign warning you to slow down because of the damaged guardrail, but it didn't affect traffic. I probably wouldn't have paid it much attention if I hadn't been looking for it.

The bridge was a burnt out wreck though. It was black from side to side and end to end. You could also see the burnt brush in the canyon down to the south. It was lucky it didn't burn more than it did.

I always wonder how Arizona deals with that area, because you can't get to it from anyplace but Nevada or Utah.

  • Thanks Itsy.

I'll check out the 91. Hopefully the 15 opens up soon.
  • There is only one available detour and DPS will start rerouting traffic over and around on the 91. If you're past that point, you'll have to do a turn around at black rock or if you're past even that point, wait until they clear the lanes and start reversing traffic. Although it's listed as a vehicle fire, it was actually a tanker truck accident with explosion and a wildfire in the canyon below. Not much remains of the tanker and ADOT needs to check the bridge before they open it up to traffic. At least it wasn't a train derailment with fire and bridge collapse like last month!
