Cloverdale, CA to I-5

We have to travel from Cloverdale, CA to I-5 this summer. 2 routes given. South on 101 to CA37, over to Vallejo and follow the freeways to I-5.
A shorter, by 58 miles is to take 101 t0 CA 128 to Calistoga then up 29 and 53 to 20 and over to I-5.
Has anybody got comments on the second route as saving 58 miles means a lot in time and fuel.
We will be pulling a 34ft 5ht wheel.

29 is not RV friendly, lots of hills and curves:( and you will lose time as you will be going much slower with more white knuckles:)
  • We will go North on I-5

If you are headed north on 1-5 then"
    1. go north on 101 to Hwy 20
    2. Hwy. 20 through Clear Lake to I-5
Hwy 20 is 2 lane but RV friendly, just relax and enjoy the views.
  • Kinda depends which way you are going on I-5. I don't recommend 128 to 29 because of the tight curves. It is doable though.
If you take 37 to Vallejo, you can pick up 780 to 680 to 580 to 5. Or, you can go E. on I-80 from Vallejo to Susuin City and take 12 east to 5. That way adds about 10 mi. back north, but avoids all of the urban traffic.
If it were me, I would drive 101 to Petaluma, take lakeville highway to 37, then to I-80. (The exit in Petaluma says Vallejo on the sign)If going south, I would go west to 780 (1-2 mi) and E. to Benicia and take the bridge across, which becomes I-680, and take it to Dublin and pick up 580 and follow it to I-5.
