Coeur d"Alene, ID to Butte, MT on I-90

We are heading for Butte, MT on Tuesday with our 40ft motor home and tow car and was wondering how I-90 East is to travel. I see where they have construction limiting vehicles to 8.5ft for a stretch and that is how wide we are.

Anyone travel I-90 East in a 40ft MH recently? Any comments on road condition, traffic, etc?
  • Been over it two times in the last two years - some nice grades but I passed a few trucks going up hill even pulling our Jeep

Never had a problem in all my travels on Interstate highways that's the way they were engineered with a max grade of 7%
  • Came over it this year in the 50 ft long lash-up we have. It was tighter (width) then in past years, due to the construction. But certainly doable.
  • Traveled that route both directions within the past six weeks. Some construction on Look Out Pass but nothing unusual for normal summer time highway construction and maintenance.
  • Went through there a couple weeks ago, same direction as you. No problem.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Since we aren't in a hurry we decided to get off the interstates for a distance and drive up RT 95 to Sandpoint, ID and catch RT 200 east to RT 93 in MT and then drop down to I-90 into Missouli, MT. It looks like a nice two lane road along side of the Clark Fork river for a long way.
  • My wife and I just traveled that route to Sandpoint from Missoula yesterday. We have a 25' class C towing a Subaru Crosstrek. For the most part, it is an easy scenic drive. There are a couple of relatively short winding stretches where the road narrows due to the proximity of cliffs along the river. It is advisable to follow the speed restrictions in these sections.
