We made that exact route a few years ago. No problem, but I do consider Douglas Pass one of the more "serious" passes in Colorado. We were towing a 34' fifth-wheel, Chevy 2500 HD Duramax/Allison.
I would not hesitate to go that way again, but I have considerable experience in mountain towing.
