Colorado Springs to Steamboat Springs

Working on this years big trip and was wondering about some of the roads on our route. Leaving Colorado Springs on Hwy 24 to Hwy 9 to Hwy 40 into Steamboat Springs. How are these roads for traveling with a 37' fifth wheel?

As Colorado routes go, I think you'll enjoy this one! Fairly easy drive, incomparable scenery, and good roads. Doesn't get much better than that!

You'll climb from C-Springs (~6000 ft) to Woodland Park and over Wilkerson Pass (9500 ft) -- you'll barely notice it, even with a 5th wheel. The drive from Wilkerson across South Park to Fairplay is a fairly flat high altitude drive (mostly at ~9000 ft) to Fairplay at ~9600 ft. If you get a chance check out South Park City in Fairplay. It's the real Old West.

From Fairplay you'll go up CO 9 over Hoosier Pass, at 11,500 ft. While pretty high, it's an easy pass, not too twisty from the south side, but does get a little twisty heading down into Breckinridge on the north side of the pass. From Breck down to Frisco and on to Silverthorne is an easy drive, but depending on when you're travelling it, can have some heavy traffic.

CO 9 from Silverthorne to Kremmling is a nice drive, the scenery gets better the closer you get to Kremmling, but it's pretty boring (IMO) between Silverthorne to Kremmling -- starts getting interesting north of Kremmling. You'll be at ~8000 ft to ~8500 ft most of the way, but it's fairly flat.

From Kremmling up to Rabbit Ears is another fairly easy drive, following the Muddy Creek Valley up to R/E. More scenery!

Rabbit Ears down to Steamboat is steep but good road all the way down. Just drop your gears and you'll be fine.
  • have towed steamboat to silverthorne on 40 and 9. not to bad. typical co. two lane highway.

gear down over rabbit ears. road surface on R-E good with a lot of passing lanes. curves are wide. some 45mph speed limits on west side of pass.

never used 9 south of silverthorne.
  • Two lane highways all the way. Good pavement, some passes to negotiate - up and down. BEAUTIFUL drive. You will have no trouble other than perhaps some slowing on the passes. Just relax, take it easy and enjoy!
