Columbus Georgia to Gatlinburg Tennessee suggestions

Hello all! Myself and a few family members are planning a trip to Gatlinburg a little later this year. I moved to Columbus Georgia a few years ago and haven't traveled there since. Does anyone have any suggestions of most scenic or most enjoyable routes through the mountains? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,
DJ

  • seems to me, to go through Cherokee will have you going a ways out of your way to the west. depending on what you are traveling in, I would seriously consider taking Hwy 27 as far north as Rome then 75 into Tennessee and cut east just south of Knoxville somewhere.

I took that route in reverse several years ago when there was a race in ATL the Sunday I was heading home. Traffic heading south out of ATL (on 75) is almost always crazy on Sunday afternoon for some reason and I try to avoid it if possible. 85 usually isn't so bad, but I figured I might as well take 27 into Columbus as it was a more relaxing drive.

  • We caravaned in multiple cars from north GA through Cherokee, NC to Pigeon Forge, TN for an October wedding about 12 years ago. Took the slow scenic route up through Gainesville to US-441 because of the leaves.

Watch the cars, they turn off and pull out in front of you without looking. We had quite a few close calls, but it was beautiful.
  • yep- straight through Smoky mtn national park. Cherokee NC, a quaint Indian town with a casino is at the south end of GSMNP and Gatlinburg is at the other end. About a 1 to 1.5 hour drive from one end to the other with numerous pull off areas for viewing and pic taking
