Condition of roads to Arctic Circle

We are planning a side trip to the Arctic Circle while we are in Fairbanks this summer. This will be the end of June or early July. We would like to take the 5th wheel on the Elliott Hwy to the junction with the Dalton, then take a day trip to the Arctic Circle and back (about 230 miles). Is this a realistic plan? There seems to be a wide variety of opinions about what the road conditions really are.

I understand there is a rudimentary camp ground at the Artic Circle. Would it be feasible to take the 5th wheel that far?

  • So the old horror stories about the road are still true then? It'll cost you at least two tires, a windshield and perhaps personal injury to drive the road end to end?
  • Yes you can drive to Prudhoe Bay, but that is as far as you can go in private vehicles and you are still miles from the bay. You cannot drive a private vehicle in the oilfield leases you have to take a paid tour. I drove the "Haul Road" for years for a living and I would "NEVER" take my personal vehicle to Prudhoe, it's mostly dirt, lots of rocks, mud, and the weather can change in a blink of the eye. If you choose to ignore this advice take a minimum of two spares, tools and the knowledge how to use them. There is fuel available and tire repair service in Prudhoe, but they don't stock tires for private vehicles. If you really want to see it, FLY you see a lot more no road damage, ex: tires, Windows, break downs hundreds of miles from no where. You can do a day trip or spend the night in rooms by the airport. Good luck and have a safe trip.
  • We drove our bounder up to coldfoot. Only one problem area with a muddy road and a 12 percent grade up. Otherwise, beautiful drive and the campground up there was nice. There were other mh on the road as well as plenty of truck campers. There were trailers and 5th wheels that had been pulled up at the beginning of the season for construction crews.

If you are just driving a toad up to the arctic circle, you should have no problem.
  • We left our motorhome near Livengood and did a day trip to the Arctic Circle our first visit to Alaska, then kicked ourselves that we didn't at least get to Coldfoot. So on our trip in 2014 we went to Coldfoot and then on to Wiseman before turning around. It is a long way, but it's all day light driving and so worth it. I would not take my RV on the road. Next trip we'll get to Prudhoe Bay, maybe by plane.
  • That is about the distance from Livengood to the Artic Circle and back.
  • 230 miles round trip sounds short? Is that just from the circle line to Prudehoe and back?
  • Yes, that sounds good.
We took MH to a free campsite just west of Livengood, then took toad on day trip to Artic Circle. It looks like a fishing hole just across a small bridge on left side. Road Maintenance gets water from river there. About three miles from Junction of Dalton on Elliot Highway
Road was in great shape, not much traffic and some areas were hard surface.
My Ice Road Tracker had no problems with road conditions.
Campground at Artic Circle is OK. I just didn't want to take any chances on my MH. Your choice! Think about fuel!
