Cross country on secondary roads.

We have been east and west on every major highway that goes across, this year we are doing a fall "see the leaves" trip. our plan is east to Missoula, then Mt 200 to Great Falls, then secondary roads east including 87, and 200 to Glendive. and on to I-94 to Detroit Lakes. and on to Mackinaw

anyone have advice on the road conditions?
  • US routes that roughly parallel an Interstate can be great roads for a scenic trip.....except through the mountains.

This means avoiding state and county routes in general.

If semi's won't use the road, you probably shouldn't either.
Of course that depends partly on what vehicle(s) you have.

When you say you've done them "all" already, does that include the trans-continental US 40 and US 50 ?

The downside of this, at least for me, is that 2 lane roads are a LOT more stressful on the driver.
  • I can't help with the road conditions but, secondary roads are the only way to see America.
    Enjoy your trip.

  • State road dept usually have sites with road conditions, you should check them.
  • I never drive an Interstate when another route is available. You’ll have a great time.
