Dearborn MI: Ford Museum and Greenfield Village

My wife and I have discussed visiting the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village this summer. But neither of us like driving in congested urban areas. I lived in this area in the late 50s. But I'm sure a lot has changed since then. Any insights and advice?

  • I visited the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village last year and there were no real traffic problems to deal with. I want to go back in a few years and look around the area some more. I didn't have time to see the Ford Rogue River Plant and the Automotive Hall of Fame. Have a Great Trip!

    Bob in Calif.
  • We stayed in Monroe at Harbortown RV resort in '09. We drove to the Museum two days and never had an issue with traffic.
  • Well,

You got some real good information, but what nobody said is that drive time in the area of HFGV is much less time span than in most urban areas. Morning is over by 9AM and evening is pretty close to 4:30 to 5:30~6 (just wait for the Museum/Village to close then drive).

We have been members there for many years and I would really suggest that you plan at least two days and wear very comfortable shoes. The indoor museum is about 9 acres and the village 260.

However you get there, it's worth the trip to see this museum!!!
X 2. The Ford Museum is the best one I have ever seen.
  • There are three camp ground in Monroe, MI right off I-75 with full hook ups and there's the Wayne fair grounds E & W on I-94 just down the street from Camping World. The fair grounds would be the shortest drive.
  • When we visited there we stayed at Sterling State Park in Monroe as the campground is on Lake Erie, not a bad drive at all. Much rather drive in Detroit suburbs than Denver area.
  • It's been a few years, but the last time I was there it wasn't any more congested than say the Cherry Hills area of Denver. Definitely nothing like Chicago or the New York areas.
  • You could call this RV park and see if there is any transportation to the museum.
Detroit Greenfield Park in Ypsilanti 734-482-7722.
We stayed at Haas Lake Park in New Hudson which was about a 20 minute drive to the museum. Not a fun drive. Lots of construction.
    What about taking a taxi?
Be sure to see the Rouge Factory Tour where they make pickup trucks. You take the bus from the museum to the tour.
