Do Mexicans need US auto insurance when crossing north?

Title explains the question.

  • Canada and the United States have an agreement that as long as you have insurance in your country you can drive in either without buying additional insurance.
  • Why swipe at the Mexicans and insurance? Ever look at the number of Norte Americanos without insurance?
  • Thanks. Family member will be crossing on Friday - first time driving his pickup truck. We'll text him as a reminder.
  • Mexican insurance policies include a rider, usually but not always, from Unity Insurance. It is a liability only policy that includes theft. You can add to the policy if you want.

    Only for the law biding

Illegal aliens get DLs in AZ and drive around w/o insurance all the time

Then a gain so do alot of US Citizens

Like I said...only the law biding do

Insurance is required to drive in US....so would imagine folks crossing either border (North/South) would need Insurance

In AZ a vehicle can not be licensed / plated without Insurance. If the Insurance expires the state will send a notice demanding proof of insurance or the plates will be pulled all within a month.

An AZ Highway Patrol Officer told me that tickets are not always followed up and paid so the Mexican vehicle will not be let back into USA at the border. If a Mexican vehicle is impounded, he said a different person than who was driving the vehicle will show up as the owner and demand their vehicle back and most often gets it.

BUT this is not a common problem but the exception! The biggest problem is not wearing a seat belt and not use to the high speed limit, there are regular single Mexican vehicle accidents on I19 with someone or multi-persons thrown from the vehicle and dying.

Because of all this and more, I carry Uninsured and Under-Insurance riders on all my policies.

Yes. We drive Mexican plated vehicles and made sure that we had liability coverage in the US.

At most border crossings there are places to purchase US insurance by the day, week, month, just like on the US side you can purchase it for Mexico.

Curious though, is it required the same way it is throughout the US?
I understand it can be bought, but must it?
