downhill to Seneca Rocks in WVa
should i consider going down this hill in first? I am towing a 5000 lb travel trailer behind a Chevy Trailblazer 5.3 v8 rated at 6200, with electric brakes on trailer.

Use whatever gear is necessary to keep your vehicle under control in the present conditions. No one but the driver will know what that is. I've driven on 33, if that's the road you're talking about, I can't imagine you would need to go below 2nd gear.
