Driving from S. CA to Flagstaff, Grand Canyon and Sedona

Hi there,

We will be taking our class B RV going from Southern CA to Flagstaff, Grand Canyon and Sedona next weekend . This is our first long distance trip and we have 3 kids (youngest one is 6months) so we are a little nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to bring, what routes to take, which rv park to stay and what do to (as a family) ?

Our van is a little old and driving is not as pleasant as mid size vans so we are concerned about road condition.

thanks
  • In Williams our favorite RV park is Grand Canyon Railway RV park. Very nice and convenient to Bearizona and Grand Canyon. From Flagstaff to Sedona take I-17 south to 179 then north to Sedona. Route 89 is not recommended for RV's. It has a series of tight turn switchbacks about 10 miles south of Flagstaff. At Camp Verde is Distant Drums RV park. A very nice full service park, convenient to Out of Africa, Montezumas Castle indian ruins. In Sedona we love Ranch Sedona RV park.

Dead Horse Ranch is a great state park. There are 3 ponds for fishing, easy trails along the river and horseback riding in the park.

Within walking distance is Blazin' M Ranch , with a western dinner show. There are things to do at the compound before dinner.

Within a 25 mile radius you have Indian ruins, Out of Africa Wildlife Park, Fort Verde State Historic Park, Verde Canyon Railroad, Jerome and Sedona.

  • Might want to do the GC and then drive to the Verde Valley to camp. Temps will be in the 70's during the day. Depending on where you stay, that will put you within 30 minutes to Sedona and Jerome and about an hour to Flagstaff.

VV Thousand Trails has a lot of activities for kids. Heated swimming pool, putt putt golf, Foosball, ping pong, playground equipment. We just spent a couple days there with our Gkids (3,6,9). They had a blast.
  • BEARIZONA in Williams, AZ
OATMAN, AZ. A ghost town brought back to life. Take carrots so kids can feed the wild burros
  • We have been in Williams AZ at the Grand Canyon Railroad RV park. Temps haven been in the hi 20's to low 30's at night and 50's during the day. Sedona was in the 70,s yesterday. We had a dusting of snow this morning but it is gon by 9. Hope this Helps
  • Should be high 50s during the day and low 30s at night. No snow is expected. Actually, it is a little chilly but gorgeous up there now. Coming from Ca, I would go I 10 to 17 north, or you can go though Kingman to the 40. There is a nice KOA in Williams that has some " kid " stuff to do.
The RV park in Sedona, Rancho Sedona I think is right on the creek. Friends were up there last weekend. Just bring layers of clothing and you will be fine. Roads are fine now. No snow on any main road at all. Have a great trip!
  • A few Aprils ago, we just made it to Williams, AZ before the roads were closed due to snow. It snowed a foot overnight. We took the train to the Grand Canyon from Williams the next day. The plan was to take the shuttle buses to many of the main sight seeing locations. Unfortunately due to the snow the shuttles were only running near the Grand Canyon Village so we didn't get to see some of the outlying attractions.

It was still a great trip but very cold to be outside.
  • Flagstaff averages 11" of snow in March. Grand Canyon averages 10". Sedona averages 14". Check Weatherbase for more complete information.
  • Be aware that this is not going to be the warmest time to visit this area and snow is still a possibility. Personally, with a 6 mo baby and the time of the year considered, this may not be the best choice to test your long distance wings. We have a 40 foot motorhome and pull a 24' enclosed car trailer, and have never found a place to make us happy in Flagstaff or Sedona. Granted you have simpler needs for your Class B. Not all RV Parks at the higher elevations are open the year round, so I would definitely choose my stops in advance or with reservations. You might be better off to choose some targets in the lower elevations of AZ where it is warmer right now and save this trip for later in the season. It might not be the best experience for the entire family at this time and it would be a shame to leave a sour taste for our first long hop.

We will be spending a month in So Cal in Hemet or Aguanga and hanging in Temecula and area.
