I live in the SF Bay Area. Getting across the Bridge is no problem. Driving through the city is. There are no freeways that go through the city and it will be tight. Very tight.
An alternate route that will take you to the east of the city is to take the 580 from the 101 across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge over to the 80 freeway and then south through Oakland on the 780.
From the 780 you can cross back over the the west on the San Mateo Bridge and then to the 101 or continue south on 780 to San Jose.
