- 3LittleDucksExplorerBe sure to get onto the bridge at in the far right lanes! We ended up going through the old (inactive) toll booth, and was frighteningly close. There are signs saying something like 'trucks/rv's 2 right lanes) but it was too late for us.
- I made it through no trouble a couple years ago. No bridge fee going north :)

We spent a week in Marin RV Park, located in Greenbrae. A short ride (about 30 min) on the Larkspur Ferry drops you off at Pier 1 in San Francisco. Trolley tickets good for a day make it pleasant to sightsee the city. Best way to see the city is camp outside. Ferry rides also to Alcatraz, do some research - lots to see in San Francisco - enjoy.
X2. We stayed at Santa Rosa Fairgrounds north on 101 and drove to the Larkspur Ferry. Got off at Fisherman's Wharf and had pre-arranged for a small van tour of the city. Our daughter who lives there even was very impressed on the knowledgeable driver and the tour, in general. It's the very best way to tour the city.

I see you are pushing them to the west side of Twin Peaks. The route (Highway 1) would be less hilly but no view of downtown S.F. (maybe a view of the Pacific coast). It would involve driving through the Golden Gate Park and Presidio Park.
Yes that is true. In my former life as a truck driver and making many trips to the San Francisco Airport, I found that using the 280 instead of the 101 there is a lot less traffic than going thru all those towns. Also if you make one bad turn in downtown you are in a lot of trouble.
Splitting off the 280 at the 19th street (Hwy 1) exit is easy, with large easy to follow road signs. The ride thru the parks is just a little bit more sightseeing.
The best part is the ride across the Golden Gate Bridge no matter how you get there.
Just a minor correction, it's 19th Ave not 19th St. 19th St will take you through the Mission and the Castro and get you nowhere near the GG Bridge.
You are right, I have fixed it. Don't want someone going the wrong way.... - LitchExplorer

The OP never stated which direction he was coming from. I would agree that getting to the area around Highway 101 north of the Golden Gate Bridge would work best for access to downtown S.F.
For anyone over 65 getting the 1-day Muni pass for $15., or one month for $23. beats the adult rate of $60. for one day. Easiest way to cover the whole city of San Francisco. - FrankShoreExplorerThank you for your answers. I will be coming from the south.
Frank - EscargotExplorerWhatever you do, do not refer to San Francisco as "Frisco", the natives refer to it by it's full name or "the city".
