Eagles Nest to Red River, Nm

New Full-Timer going to Red River from Fort Worth with a 38' Forrest River Wildcat 5th wheel wondering how the road grade is between Eagles Nest and Red River on NM 34.
Pulling with a 2011 F-250 6.2 Gas. Any Concerns?

  • From the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' (highly recommended that you puchase this if traveling in the West), it states "Northbound descent from Eagle Nest is 4 miles of mostly 7-8%. There are 30 and 35 mph curves and continues to the edge of Red River".

I recall doing it with our 40' motorhome with no issues. Have a great trip and enjoy your new lifestyle.
  • We're in Eagle Nest for the summer and make the trip to Red River often. The times I've been towing that stretch were manageable with gear use and minimal braking: stab the brakes to scrub off speed.

Bobcat Pass down to Red River the most challenging.
  • We have driven NM-38 between Eagle Nest and Red River many times pulling the trailer. Going from Eagle Nest, the last 2 miles to the summit are the steepest. From there is about 4 miles of 7-8% grade descending into Red River. We prefer this route even when going between Eagle Nest and Taos as US-64 has narrow shoulders and for the past couple of years a very rough road surface. Have not driven either route since last October.

    Edited to correct typos.
  • The only steep part is the road going down into Red River, called "Bob Cat Pass". Just take it slow. Went down it 4 years ago in a gas Motor Home, used a lot of brake going down.
  • Not much different from other mountain roads. Downshift coming down you will be fine.
  • it's a hard grade low and slow will be what you need lots of switch backs if I remember correctly
