Edmonton to Humboldt Redwoods State Park December

I have figured out that we will cross over to the Hwy 1 in California at Willits to Fort Bragg and go south to San Francisco. So now I just need the path of least resistance, meaning the least of mountain passes and slow roads in December to get us to Humboldt Redwoods State Park from Edmonton. We will be driving a 26ft motor home and it will be winterized till we get south and confident that we can de-winterize. I google mapped but it seems to take me over alot of mountain passes. We are not looking for much scenery before Humboldt Redwoods State Park we just need to get there in a fairly easy manner and then de-winterize then start the sight seeing. Any suggestions would be great. Thank You

I have never had a problem on that part of CA1 or US101 in a 27' MH. I have went as far south as Ventura on CA1 bypassing SF. JMO

  • Hi Birdie123,

I'd build in a couple of "extra" days. That way, if there is a storm, you can wait it out. I had to do that one year at Radium Hotsprings.

There is a hotel/rv park in Fernie that is open year round (electric only).

You can flush the toilet with windshield washer antifreeze (from the bottle).

Be sure to winter protect the fridge if you plan on using it in cold weather.

It sounds like a lovely trip.
  • thanks paulj,,,,I know was just looking for the least resistance with a Motorhome with experience on the roads south of us. Not to afraid of snow storms as we live with them living in Alberta and to be expected with Winter driving. But we all know all our mountain passes here and we don't typically drive on them with our Motorhomes.
  • Google Maps 1st choice crosses the Rockies via the Crowsnest. That's about as low and gentle a pass as you can find. Then US95, US395 to I84 to Portland. No passes that way, though you might hit wind, dust and blowing snow across central Washington. And strong winds through the Columbia Gorge if there's an Alberta cold air mass behind you. Then I5 to Grants Pass, and US199 to Crescent City. 199 winds a bit as it follows the Smith River in California, but takes a tunnel under the highest point near the state border.

An alternative would be take OR42 from Roseburg to the coast. A little longer, but lower.

There isn't anything more direct, even if you were willing to cross some passes.
  • This trip will start on November 28th and would like to be at Humboldt by Dec 1st...don't know it that's being realistic or not.
