El Pozo, Patzcuaro

We are about to cross the border at Lukeville tomorrow, after a breakdown.
Just got an e-mail from friends who said that in May, when they were at El Pozo in Patzcuaro, the man said that they may not be open this winter. We were planning on being there next week. Does anyone know anything about this park?
Just found an e-mail address for them in Church's book, and will try that, too. Thanks!

  • If it turns out that El Pozo is over, would/could you please provide directions? Cabs, collectivos, all good, but we really would like more space than Villa Patzcuaro, especially during the Dia de los Muertos crowds.
  • Rancho la Mesa on top of the hill overlooking town is a great location - but it is off the beaten path so you either have to have a car or call a cab. All new utilities and water so all is good with that. Few stay there so the extension cord trick can work. Best view of Janitzio and watching the early morning fog over the lake - city lights at night - best view we have seen in the area. Though you do need a car it is not that far from town. We find getting to the main plaza is shorter than from the other parks. No grass though - all gravel. They have fancy show horses and ostriches. The road in is dirt and rough but fine for the biggest rigs other than the entry/exit gate is a bit tight - once in there is tons of room. We have stayed there several times.
  • It's great for our two large dogs, the coop taxi's are great, and love the trains. Just hoping it's still open!
  • Great spot: The owner got tired of electricity hogs and solved his problem the Mexican way. Each site has a 15 amp breaker. Not 20's and 30's like some places. Quickly limits your power usage. Great location and we too used the cooperativos taxis. Water was a problem.

  • Would be a shame, the only place a big rig can get in easily. The mini taxi vans stop out front to take you downtown making for a much nicer day. When we were there we were there it was cold, near freezing. We were able to run a cord to an adjacent electrical hookup to run a heater while we used the hookup in our site for the rest of our needs. Power was very low. Nice grass spaces with lots of room. Owners were great.
