Entance To Blackwoods

Heading to Acadia late Sept., everything I can find says Blackwoods entrance is off Rt 3, I got that part, but looking at the Google street view of Rt 3, it takes you through downtown Bar Harbor, with a 90 degree turn & very narrow streets, (traffic parked on both sides of the street.)
My question is, is it better/easier to take Rt 198 to RT 3 to the CG. ?

That would be the main entrance to Acadia NP which is just after Hulls Cove. Stay in the right lane going uphill and it goes into the main entrance to the park.

Another choice is to stay on rt 3 to the village but DON'T turn left into the village. Go straight on Eden St to the intersection and follow it straight past the Quality Inn on Kebo St. You will come to Cromwell Harbor Road where you can take a left and follow it to Rt3 past the village and stay on that road through Otter Creek and Blackwoods or go straight on Kebo St to the Park Loop Road and get off at Sieur de Monts Entrance onto Otter Creek Rd. Beware there is a 12 foot clearance bridge on the Park Loop Road just past that point.

We just got back from Bar Harbor / Acadia a few days ago and have been going there for the last 8 years or so.
  • I think you are better off doing as you proposed. Take 198 as soon as you cross the Trenton Bridge onto Mt. Desert Island, then follow to Rt. 3 and Blackwoods. It looks shorter and more direct than continuing on Rt. 3 and looking for a back road.
  • The route you are speaking of does take you right thru the downtown core of Bar Harbor. The streets are a little tight and I would not want to take my trailer thru there. There is another turn off a few miles before the town, it is well marked and a little past the Bar Harbor Campground. The road just forks to the right and takes you into the park, from there you can get to the campground, and I would guess it is about the same distance (minus the traffic and hassle of the route going thru town).
