I'm looking forward to retirement in two years and plan on taking a long trip from Florida to Alaska and back. I'm looking for scenic drives and side trips. What is your favorite scenic stretch and is it an RV-Safe route? (i.e., no low underpasses or 5 ton limit bridges.)

Scenic stretches from Florida to Alaska and back? This could be the longest thread ever - there will be thousands of possible replies. And with no even slight mention of a general route you will have people taking you up both coasts and hundreds of variations thru the middle.I could name many dozen things myself but will hold off at this point. If it becomes more definitive I will add some things.

I just did a general internet google search entitled, "Scenic Routes" and got enough reading material that would keep me busy for a long time.

Highway 75 from Sun Valley to Stanley. Idaho.

I would really like to answer, but without knowing what you want to see, it is difficult at best.

We can get tired of vast expanses of rolling country. (Montana and the Dakotas)
We can get tired of driving a tunnel of trees. (The Natchez Trace)
You can only take in so many sprawling blue-green vistas. (The Blue Ridge Parkway)
The endless desert can seen truly endless. (Texas, New Mexico and Arizona)
After a few thousand miles water is just more water. (Great Lakes, east, west and gulf coasts)

Yes, it can get weary, but we have seen this. If you have not, then decide what you want to more from your "to see" to your "seen" list. You can't run out of list in just one life.

Busskipper offers a great start. I also like the drive through the Snowy Mountains just outside of Laramie, WY.

My Favorite is Rt 128 in Utah - between Moab and I-70 or is it Rt 12 in Utah - Maybe Rt 20 Wind River Canyon in Wyoming, Trail Ridge, Million Dollar Highway, Rt 6 out of Golden to I-70, Rt 64 around Lake Toxaway, I-70 just east of Glenwood Springs - over under, along the Colorado River, Rt 24 Minturn to Leadville in the fall, PCH .......... ..............

Might just be me but I;m having a hard time deciding ... Might just be I love to drive all these roads, and could likely go on and on thru most states in the US.

Beartooth Highway- outside Yellowstone. I wouldn't drive my RV on it, but others have.

Route 101 - Oregon Coast. We drove it. All the best campgrounds are along the route.

Haines Highway - Haines Alaska. We did it both ways in the bus. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Dalton Highway - North Alaska. Amazingly beautiful and worth the trip. Did it to Coldfoot in the RV. Just go slow. Definitely travel by toad as far as Atigun Pass.
