Z-Peller..I think the post about border crossings was at the Stewert/Hyder in Northern BC. There is no US presence entering the US, and one can go up the gravel road and back into Canada, again, no presence. When one leaves Hyder on the paved road..into Canada..there is a presence. And they can be a tad...tetchy.
Hi Gary....sorry, nope, original post was about Port Angeles to Victoria....
....but yep, I used to tow the freight barge from Prince Rupert to Stewart before the road went there. Got "Hyderized" at the Glacier Inn back then too....brother of a good friend of mine was the Canadian Customs officer there for many years. - CA_TravelerExplorer III

Does the US Boarder security checkat the Victoria terminal take the place of going through the US Customs check in Port Angeles for US citizens? The Black Ball Ferry site says to arrive at the terminal 90 minutes prior to departure for this security check. - Z-PellerExplorerWow....talk about a thread getting horribly HIJACKED!!

Brain Teaser: A few years ago I entered the US from Canada and there was no border station. I proceeded into Canada with no border station and then proceeded into the US with no border station. Next I entered Canada with a border station. All of this was compl
etely legal. Where was I?
Could this be at the International Peace Garden in North Dakota? - nevadanickExplorerThey were nice at Stewart. Also sign there says from midnight to 8am you have to call as its not manned.

Gary Haupt - Z-PellerExplorerAt Port Angeles you may have a courtesy US customs check before boarding ferry to ensure you have a valid passport for entering Canada at Victoria. When you disembark ferry at Victoria you will pass through Canadian Immigration/Customs to enter Canada. Blackball ferry terminal at Victoria is a US portal so if for some reason you are inadmisable into Canada, you will remain within the bounds of the terminal and take next ferry back to Port Angeles. When you leave Canada at Victoria you will have a US Customs and Immigration check at the ferry terminal portal, then upon arrival at Port Angeles you will pass through a US Customs check point leaving ferry terminal.
At any US / Canada border crossing you do not go through US Customs to leave USA, nor do you go through Canadian Customs to leave Canada. - ChopperbobExplorerJust returned from Victoria. Had my class c. They asked for my pasport, asked a couple questions and that was it. I was ready for more but that was it. It was a little let down but I can't complain. I didn't have a resavation so I arrived at 6:30 and they made me wait till 7:30 ferry. Not nice. I spent the day at clover point park.

I was amused by the irony of this event.
Ca Traveller, Stewart/Hyder - mikimExplorerIt has been a few years but about 2007 the process from Victoria to Washington State....we were boarded twice in Canada before being allowed to drive onto the ferry and then again in Washington State. All three were US Customs officers who had me remove the key from the ignition of our Class A and place the key on the dash.
