Ferry to Kodiak Island

Hi, I would like to know if it is worth to go to Kodiak Island with the Truck Camper for a week or so or if it would be better to just go there and take a tour, stay there a couple of days and come back. Is there much to see, can you see bears without spending a fortune, how long of road is there to travel.

I checked the price to go on Kodiak and it seems to be one way only.It would be around 250 for my rig plus 150 for tow people. I wonder if this price is "return" or only one way.
  • I've never been to Kodiak Island but here's a little story about the place. I'm a retired Coast Guardsman and when we were driving northbound on the Alaska Highway in 2009, during the early part of June, we camped at a bunch of places along the way. At several of the campgrounds we ran into Coast Guard families who were relocating to assignments in the lower 48. Each one of the military members as well as their wives, were not happy at having to leave the USCG Station on Kodiak. It is a great place to live and families, children included, generally like it there. One guy was going to Los Angeles and was none to happy. Funny thing though, my son-in-law is an active duty Coast Guard officer and is now assigned to Sector Long Beach. Strange things happen!
  • Thanks, I think I will not take the RV if I decide to go, too short of roads for what i cost. May be I will take the ferry trip and take a tour on the Island.

    Thanks for your info
  • My experience was way back in 2005, so it may have changed a lot. I took my TC over on the ferry, stayed for about a week, and had a great time. But as mentioned, the roads don't go far, and you (most likely) won't see a bear anywhere you can drive.
  • Kodiak is a great place to go fishing, for a week or so. A couple of times I flew over from Anchorage to Kodiak, the town, the took a float plane oner to the village of Karluk to fish the river of the same name.

Kodiak has some great history, as it was the first capital established by the Governor of the Russian America Company. After 4 or 5 years they decided to move the capital south to near where Sitka is now located. This was due to two reasons as I understand, the weather in winter time Kodiak can be brutal, and the governor, Lord Baranof wanted to send the company fur trappers farther south, toward Northern California .
But a couple of days in town and a drive out the roads would probably be enough for me. I never considered taking our RVs over to the island. The ferry ride would be fun if the weather is good, and passenger fares are very reasonable, leaving the RV in Homer for a few days. Kodiak is well worth seeing IMHO.
  • We used Sasquatch Adventure for flight seeing out of Homer. Fabulous trip to Katmai National Park, and less expensive than going to Kenai. Apples and oranges, but we recommend it highly! We saw lots of bears--they get great reviews.
  • Having lived on Kodiak Island, I have a couple of ideas for you. If your main reason for going there is to see the bears, I would camp in Homer and take a flightseeing trip from there to view bears. Kodiak is very beautiful on nice days, on bad (rainy) days, not so nice. The road is about 15 miles north and about 50 miles south with a few places to camp each way. There are a few villages located on the island but most of them are fly out only. What time of the year are looking at? Summertime would be best or early fall.
