FMM Changes

I just read that FMM tourist permits cannot be obtained through any of the travel clubs Vagabundos, etc. Apparently a new agency is now issuing the permits and they insist on face to face contact!. I would think there will also be changes concerning the cancellation of said permits.

  • I wonder if this will make it easier to Drive Down,Fly out for a week or two then fly back in and Drive Out at the end of the Season!

Under the Old system it was always a hassle turning in the 180 Day FMM at the Airport and trying to get a longer than 30 Day FMM when You flew back in!

For some reason the Airlines supplied FMM were limited to short term visits !

It's amazing to see how quickly Mexico is catching up on technology! The Public Education System is wonderful and it seems that everyone has a Smart Phone and a Tablet!
  • moisheh,
Did you get the name of the agency? I'd like to follow up on this for my sticky.
  • Sorry all I have is that it is called "MID". I have no idea what that stands for.

  • Well, it appears that the rumor that you can't get FMM's from the travel clubs anymore is just that, a rumor. I can't find anyone in the Mexico government that knows any thing about it and both the Vags, and Discover Mexico state that they are still issuing them. You still have to cross at the place you list on the app and get the FMM signed but that's it.
  • It came from Ada vis. Here is a cut and paste:

We've picked up the FMM Tourist Visa's for the travel club for the past 10 years and I share this with you because we know the contacts in Mexico and who are making the decisions. Below I've shared with you our last meeting with them:

Right now, as of today, the web site to pay for the FMM Tourist Visa has been taken down by the Mexican Immigration Department of Mexico. In addition, we've been told the MID of Mexico plans to take over the issuance of the FMM Tourist Visa once again. They told us this is because they feel, due to the terrorism threats in our world today, they want to be face to face with the people that are coming into their country. Remember everything in Mexico is always subject to change in an instance.

This might be why the travel clubs refuse to refund, for any reason, any member, their money if the FMM Tourist Visa is turned away or refused at the border, and you have to buy another one. Remember, you still have to have the FMM Visa validated at the crossing point declared on your paperwork this is the same place your pay for them. For this reason, we've secured 100 FMM Tourist Visa forms, that you have to fill out and have validated at the border. We can send you these free of charge because you still have to pay the $29 at the border to activate them.

Remember, always put in 180 days in the duration spot so it can be used up to 6 months.

  • Mexican immigration acronym is the INM not MID. MID is an invention of the original poster (ie. MID is purely fictitious).

Mexico has one of the most porous borders on Earth (its about as bad as Afghanistan). There is zero chance they could ever hope to keep undesirables out. It would be like trying to keep water from straining through a spaghetti strainer. Think about it.
  • Take all the 2nd hand information with 6 or seven grains of salt...

For instance the fee for an FMM is THREE HUNDRED POINT ZERO pesos. Has been this figure for a loooooooong time (for Mexico).

$21.43 dollars at an exchange rate of 14.00 to the peso is a hell of a long way from twenty-nine dollars.

    This isn't a "I'm Right - You're Wrong" argument.

It is solely a pure and strong plea. and piece of advice to take what you read with a LOT of skepticism. With regard to extraneous facts and authorities opinions.

One time several years ago a knothead authority argued with me about ADUANA at Tecate. Through bamboo splinters and truth serum I figured out he had NEVER been inside the oficina de Aduana. I had spent maybe a dozen hours there gathering facts, gossip, trivia, and opinions.

Many Mexican officials are full of Krap. But occasionally a person encounters one who is honest, dedicated and knowledgeable. I do not like surprises - operating on assumptions or ridiculously inaccurate "expert" opinions then finding out the hard way Mexican law reads differently. Right out of the book.

Hassles make me CRANKY. So now I operate on the principle of MEXICAN LAW, and REGULATIONS as written. Opinions in travel books get ripped out by the roots and are used to start campfires.
