While there apparently are attitudes on both sides (and it sounds that's your main gripe), if that happened to me I would blame myself for hearing this story many times on the forums and knowing that the equipment was available to prevent these failures and chose not to have it. Fix your damage, buy a surge protector, and chill..
PS- Reading through the closed post, there was ONE person claiming you shouldn't know how to use a volt meter, and several with the opposite comment. Interesting how that got turned around.
