Pounding ground rods can differ, if the soil is hard enough a chipping hammer won't even work. I know I did it off and on as a lineman. We used hydraulic 60 or 90#jack hammers with four foot rods, you won't see any one pounding an 8 foot rod, those are laid in trenches. That's why we pounded in a few depending on our readings and tied them together.
I added a secondary elect. panel at home and had to lay a 4foot rod and tie it into the copper water lines for my ground.
