From Toronto, ON to Sault. Ste. Marie, MI

What is the best route? How are the highways? What about diesel availability? Campgrounds? Boon docking? Any and all info appreciated.
Thank you!

I noticed that the OP has a larger motor home, probably pulling a toad. Yes, he can get in but will have to find a suitable back in site. Some of the larger (easier to get into) sites are taken by seasonals. We were in there in June with a 39 ft. 5er, I got my exercise parking the RV!

I was there with a volvo 670 13' high semi and a 36' trailer ,the A loop was the only place I would consider.Trees are trimed high enough but not to a width that is adequate , not unusual for a PP. the sites are huge but back in lane congifuation is hit or miss.

  • The Chutes Provincial Park is at Massey Ontario, just north of the town. You can reserve online for a site. It's a nice park and you may want to stay an extra day. It is about a 6 hour drive from Toronto, up the 400/69 Highway to 17.

  • Take the 401 out of Toronto (or 427 to 401 if you are closer to downtown) then take 400 north,it becomes hwy 69 to Sudbury, take 17 west to SSM.

We stayed at Serpent River last week, it's a former KOA and it will take your Rig.It isn't as well maintained as a KOA but it's a better stop than a provincial park for larger rigs.

Depending on where you are in TO, it's about 500 km. (300 miles) to Serpent River and a bit shorter distance to SSM from Serpent River.

Serpent River is west of Sudbury (about 75 km. or so) near the intersection of hwy 108 that goes to Eliott Lake.

There are a number of bridges being repaired (it's the construction season!)on the route, one side of each bridge is closed and being worked on and they have automatic traffic lights installed. It will slow you down a bit.
  • The best route IS 401 - 403 cross at Sarnia and north on I75.If you want a more senic route out of Toronto
-north on 400 to 69 to trans canada 17 to the Sault. All services available but more costly (by far).
We stay at serpent River campground (Ill find a link).Chutes Provincial Park is near by and nicer but not FHU.
  • Sorry, I should have told you that we are leaving out of Toronto. Where is Sarnia? We want to travel in Canada not on I-75 in the US. I guess I'm asking about Highway 17 (?) Thanks
